Obstacles, threats, and invitations all have a status apart from those who face them. Each object insists on itself, helping determine how others must act. To be effectively used, whatever is encountered must be dealt with in some accord with its nature and functioning. No matter how thoroughly people are socialized and civilized, how conventionalized they are, they are forced again and again to attend to problems not of their own making. The weather, the seasons, the changes from day to night to day are due to forces not under human control, though people may and do modify, anticipate, and take advantage of them.

At earlier times, more people apparently paid some- Page 14 what the same attention to it than is commonly done today. Still, even today, spring and summer are lived through in different ways, and day and night are divided for all in considerable accord with the rising and setting of the sun. When people act collaboratively, they act together often with the strength and diversity needed to control what would otherwise overwhelm. The separation from the rest of the world that their collaboration requires and promotes follows on (but never extinguishes) their being together with whatever else there is.
