A science curriculum committee, of which I was a member, used readability formulas to estimate the difficulties of the print materials in each curricula being reviewed. We found that some publishers had materials that were consistently more difficult than others. Also, the passages in some publishers’ curriculum were quite irregular, with one passage being very easy and another being quite difficult.
