We conclude with recommendations for nursing as we continue to care for those who suffer in a system that is chaotic and troubled.

An expert witness is one who testifies or speaks in public forums about the special knowledge his or her expertise brings to a public issue. Nurses have spoken out in their own institutions and, increasingly, in public forums about issues such as unrelieved pain, grief, and loss. The visionary role is one in which nursing’s collective vision develops as each nurse speaks out about the suffering he or she encounters, how best to respond to it, and the need for a future in which suffering is not ignored.

The literature reviewed has been selected based on searches of medical, nursing, ethics, theology, and other literature. For the thesis, the focus has been on literature with the greatest clinical application. All of the literature cited in the references has been cited in the text. Hundreds of additional citations were reviewed but those included reflect literature that was felt to be most clinically relevant to suffering associated with illness. The second source of data that has informed this work has been narrative data derived from interviews or written comments from patients, family caregivers, and nurses.
