For example, it was inaccurate to claim, as many repeatedly did, that modern children were less physically active than the children of previous generations. Very little compelling scientific evidence to support this idea had ever existed and, as I show later in this book, a number of scientists have recently and publicly recanted their previous statements on this subject.

In between these two conferences, Symeon Dagkas and Richard Bailey hosted me on a brief but hugely enjoyable visit to the University of Birmingham, where I presented and discussed some of the research contained in this book. As ever, my own institution Charles Sturt University and its School of Human Movement Studies have been a constant support, now stretching back over fourteen years.
