Businesspeople serving as NPO board members can often provide useful information about and access to potential corporate partners. The task for a business manager searching the scarcer, less thorough, and more difficult to access information on nonprofits is facilitated when the company has a focused area of social sector engagement—for example, youth services, environment, or public education.

Everything is different. Once you understand how nonprofits work, think, and operate, you can get a lot of great things accomplished. ” We can see that these differences create distinctive challenges, but also great opportunities. Collaboration across sectors is clearly not achieved by simply applying standard operating procedures for collaborating with peer organizations. NPOs and businesses need to adapt their relationshipbuilding approaches to the special nature of cross-sector alliances. As they do so, they will find it useful to take a strategic perspective.

The fourth dimension is relationship management. Is the partnership a minimally managed collaboration? Is responsibility for the relationship an assigned duty? Are adequate incentives in place to foster collaboration? Are communication processes explicit? How high are performance expectations set, and how is accountability ensured? Systematic thinking is essential to strategic planning, and the Collaboration Continuum is a useful reference for systematic analysis of a collaboration. Although integrative relationships have the highest strategic value on the continuum, other relationship stages perform important functions and may fit an organization’s particular needs better at some times.
