I applaud these authors who are trying like crazy to market their books. Unfortunately, an author event at the library is rarely the answer for you or for them. David Domkoski, Public Relations Director for Tacoma Public Library, reckons that events for first novelists are the most challenging programs to do. Those are the cases when twenty people can be counted a huge success. And these are first novelists who have the weight of a major publishing house behind them. Events for first novelists who are selfpublished are even more difficult, if not impossible, to pull off.

I swallowed hard, did my homework, read each book carefully and prepared questions that I wanted to know, that I thought the majority of the audience wanted to know or that would let the author expand on the book in an interesting way. I’m glad to report it worked wonderfully. Some authors, like Jacqueline Mitchard or Erik Larson, could hold forth engagingly with no assistance from me, but they graciously pretended that I was having an impact on the proceedings. Other authors, like Bharti Kirchner and Harriet Scott Chessman, became very comfortable chatting away with me and really bloomed in the interview process.

We were inspired by the world of art in Debra’s book, The Madonnas of Leningrad, to use art as a central theme for our day. ).
