What Sartre takes himself to have established in the main body of Imagination is, first, the indubitable psychic reality of the image, and, second, the impossibility of accounting for it as a sensible content of consciousness. The clue to a solution of the problem of the image lies in a rethinking of the nature of consciousness itself, If images are the carriers of thought, and words the carriers of meaning, we are tempted to ask what lies behind the images or under the words that might give substance to thought and meaning.
ETE 36) That, thinks Sartre, is too much even for psychoanalysis, which covertly admits a comprehension of the symbol by consciousness under the form of an analogy; the symbol, as symbol of the suppressed, is constitutive of consciousness: In this case, there is nothing behind it and the relation between symbol, symbolized and symbolization is an intra-structural connection in consciousness. But if we add that consciousness symbolizes under the causal pressure of a transcendent fact, the repressed desire, we fall back into the theory discussed above which makes the relation between signified and signifier a causal one.
But even if psychology is considered nothing more than the study of human behaviour, the question of what counts as behaviour requires an analysis of the interaction between agent and world, subject and situation, and on the side of the subject a further distinction has to be made between mere bodily reactions, behaviour properly speaking, and the states of consciousness that accompany them. We are therefore compelled to ascend to the source of subjectivity, to transcendental consciousness, Once again Husserl is invoked to correct the deficiencies of traditional psychology.
