Juliet’s suitor Paris isn’t interested in the feud, however; he has come to seek Juliet’s hand in marriage. Capulet initially claims that Juliet is not ready for marriage, because she is only 13 years old and “yet a stranger in the world” (8). (Note that Shakespeare’s sources for the play depict an older Juliet — she is 18 in Painter’s version and 16 in Brooke’s version. ) When Paris replies, “Younger than she are happy mothers made,” Capulet counters that women who marry too young are often scarred (12).

All of Capulet’s other children have died, so he plans to take special care of Juliet, “the hopeful lady of my earth” (15). His emphasis on “earth” suggests not only that Juliet is the sole inheritor of his lands, but also that her children will carry on his bloodline. Despite these valid reasons to oppose the marriage, Capulet eventually tells Paris that he’ll agree to the marriage if Paris convinces Juliet. Capulet’s inconstancy in this scene prepares you for his later reckless, sometimes violent, mood shifts.
