The story is often told of how he was consulted about the leaking roof of the city church of St Chad. On inspecting the building he discovered large cracks and advised that it was liable to collapse at any moment. His advice was treated with ridicule but only the next morning 21 22 From Jessop to Marc Isambard Brunel the tower of the church fell down, demolishing most of the nave. After that, his reputation soared. Telford’s first opportunity to design a church himself was in Bridgnorth, where he produced a competent but hardly striking design for the new church of St Mary Magdalene.

They were not all built of stone. The first iron bridge in England had been erected in Coalbrookdale a few years previously and Telford soon proved himself a master of the structural use of the new material. During this period, Telford was appointed engineer to the British Fishery Society, which was formed to develop the Highland fishing industry by constructing a series of small fishing ports. Since communication by road was virtually non-existent in the Highlands, a survey was necessary, which Telford undertook in 1799.

He was the third child and second son of Jean Charles Brunel, a moderately prosperous farmer, and Maria Victoire Lefebre; who died when he was seven. Originally destined by his parents for the priesthood, the boy convinced his father that his talents were more practical rather than theological, and so he should become an engineer instead. He was educated at the College of Giscours, where he began training as a military officer, but then was sent to the seminary of Sainte Nicaise in Rouen. Next he served in the French navy, first as a cadet, then as an officer for six years from 1786, during which he visited many of France’s possessions in the Caribbean.
