The defection of the earl made Dunbar Castle a threat to English authority in Lothian. This was already challenged by bands of local knights, based in the hills to the south or in fortified caves. To remove the threat, Edward III sent an army under the earls of Salisbury and Arundel. In January 1338 they laid siege to the coastal stronghold.
