The Darwinian limitation is a variant of the flux of life itself, deprived of any and all resources of reflexive validation that are not themselves infected with the same limitation. In short, knowledge, finally, is an extraordinary form of bootstrapping. The theme may be focused a bit more forcefully. After the work of Kant and Hegel, the admission that the analysis of knowledge cannot be made to rest on any disjunctive account of the contributions of “subject” and “object” signifies that (1) transcendentalism is as indefensible as preKantian cognitive privilege; (2) realism cannot fail to be constructivist, though reality is not itself (for that reason) constructed; (3) what we count as objective reality, as independent of our thinking of what is real, must be an epistemic (not an ontic) construction if it is to be distinguished from noumenalism; and, therefore, (4) it is no longer possible to disjoin the realist and idealist aspects of objective knowledge—the canonical contrast between realism and idealism no longer makes sense.

Quine, however, believes that haecceity can be replaced by quiddity; David Armstrong believes that real possibility can be explained in terms of actuality if modeled on the Tractatus; Nelson Goodman believes that predicative similarity can be explained in nominalist terms. These are troublingly elementary mistakes that accumulate (among justifiably admired philosophers) with alarming ease,19 though they happen to be advanced in the service of a contest favoring a thoroughgoing extensionalism whose latest inning we must stay to witness.
