English physiologist Edward Schaefer’s experiments focused on the liver, kidney and pancreas as organs of internal secretion and he rejected Brown-Se´quard’s hypothesis regarding the sex glands. In an important speech to the British Medical Association in 1895 Schaefer did not mention the clinical studies done on the testicles or the ovaries and ‘dismissed the idea that the sex glands produced internal secretions’ (Borell 1976: 261). These glands, he and others still thought, caused their effects via the nervous system (Schaefer, in Medvei 1982: 335).

Hormones, he claimed, are produced and circulated by the body in order to satisfy recurring physiological needs (Borell 1985: 11). Two years later Schaefer accepted that it was ‘highly probable that it is to internal secretions containing special hormones that the essential organs of reproduction – the testicles and the ovaries – owe the influence that they exert on the development of secondary sexual characters, and . . upon the maintenance in a welldeveloped condition of important internal organs of generation’ (Schaefer, in Borell 1985: 13).
