Corby's splendid moment on a boulder in Gettysburg's wheatfield was not distinctive, but representative, in a life of devotion to his faith and to the people he served. Early Life William Corby was born to Daniel and Elizabeth Corby on October 2, 1833 in Detroit, Michigan. His father had been born thirty-five years earlier in Kings County, Ireland and as a young man had emigrated to Canada. In 1824 he married Elizabeth Stapleton in Montreal. The Corbys arrived in Detroit in 1826 where, over the next forty years, Daniel became a prominent real estate dealer and one of the wealthiest landed proprietors in the county.

M. mentioned in the Preface was Mary Frances Murphy, who probably provided some research or secretarial aid to Corby in the writing of the memoirs. Most important to Father Corby, however, was his ministering to the bodies and the souls of men who lived with constant hardship, and who frequently faced the prospect of their own deaths with an immediacy seldom experienced by those in civilian life.

For many years, however, there was no evidence that this example was leading him toward a religious life; if anything, he seemed to be following in his father's footsteps in business. William was educated in the common schools until he 5Michigan Catholic, March 25, 1886. Page xii was sixteen; then he went to work in his father's real estate firm. For four years he obtained valuable experience in the business world, but his father sensed that he was cut out for some higher calling. 6 The school had been founded only ten years earlier by the Congregation of Holy Cross, a religious community first organized in Le Mans, France by a group of priests led by the Abbé Moreau.
