The Crawfords have both felt real affection at Mansfield, but old London habits will prove too strong in the end . 32 Chapter 37 Sir Thomas is surprised that Fanny has not shown any regret at the departure of Henry Crawford, but puts it down to the arrival of William Price on a visit. Edmund is equally astonished to find that Fanny does not miss Mary. Both father and son agree that a visit to her parents at Portsmouth would be good for Fanny . Sir Thomas hopes that an absence from wealth and elegance might incline her to accept Henry's offer .
On such an occasion they are joined by Mrs Grant and Edmund, who is glad to see that they are becoming such good friends. He is in love with Mary, but she still has reservations about marrying a poor country clergyman. Edmund and Fanny prepare to leave, but both are invited to dine at the Parsonage, and Edmund gives a conditional acceptance on Fanny's behalf. 21 Commentary There is little that Fanny and Mary have in common, apart from their feelings for Edmund. Fanny enjoys the country, natural beauty and solitude , while Mary longs for the bustle of town life.
