Effective adult reading is a complex constructive process, full of false starts, recursions, fix-ups, dead ends, blind alleys—not to mention personal quirks, tastes, strengths, and weaknesses. It’s valuable for kids to see how all these attributes of real working readers go together day after day—not to be copied, but as one sample to build on, to vary from, to improvise off. If teachers are secure enough, they can “teach” their students a great deal simply by joining a group as an equal and reading a new book right along with the kids.

In his book Response and Analysis (1988), Probst lays out a concise description of reader response theory, applying it to the real situation in public schools. He explains how American teachers, in their hunger to push students up the cognitive ladder to the analysis of literature, forget or refuse to begin with students’ response to their reading. Probst explains that in good teaching, the response always comes first. As he reminds us: The pleasures that drew us first to literature were not those of the literary scholar.
