DELIVERY: SPONTANEOUS VERSUS PLANNED HUMOR What is the best way to go about it bringing humor into the classroom? For people who don’t consider themselves funny, it might seem reasonable to think up a joke related to the material in advance and deliver it when the time comes. MacAdam (1985) cautions against planning humor in advance, advocating instead a more freeform approach: “spontaneous rather than belabored or artificial use of humor appears to be a significant element in creating a positive communicative climate” (p.

121). Contemporary humor takes pains to appear conversational and spontaneous despite actually being carefully planned and scripted.
