Untersuchungen zur Lehre von der Gestalt. II. Psychologische Forschung, 1923, 4, 301-350. Criteria for Representations of Shape Michael Brady Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts Abstract Three criteria for judging representations of shape are proposed. The cri teria are illustrated for the Generalized Cylinder representation of threedimensional volumes and the Smoothed Local Symmetries representation of planar shapes. A representation for the shape of surfaces is proposed, called Curvature Patches.

We have argued that inspection and occlusion demand representations that have local support. We have also proposed that straight line contours, and possible disks, should be treated as a special case. Representations should also be rich in the sense of being informationpreserving. The SAT and generalized cones are rich, the generalized Hough transform is not. To be useful, a representation requires less storage than the original shape. To achieve this goal it is necessary to represent an object at 54 Michael Brady Figure 15.

Textural segmentation is also a function of the number of difference signals. The greater the number of display locations over which a difference signal occurs, the stronger will be the textural segmentation. The function of decision units is to segment a visual pattern into textural components on the basis of the magnitude and distribution of the difference sig nals. , in slope, between components in a visual pattern is sufficiently greater than those within component. Textural segmentation is hierarchical.
