Adams, the son of Charles Francis Adams, graduated from Harvard College (1856) and practiced law in Boston (1858–61). He was promoted from lieutenant in the African American 5th Massachusetts Cavalry to general during the Civil War. He wrote Chapters of Erie (1871) and Railroads: Their Origins and Problems (1878), which led to his appointment to the Massachusetts Board of Railroad Commissioners (1869–79) and as president of the Union Pacific Railroad (1884–90).
