Relevance is relative to the participants' purposes, not to conversations qua sequences of speech acts. Conversations do not have a particular purpose or point; only participants have purposes (cf. Searle, 2002, pp. 187 and 193). Despite Searle's pessimism regarding the possibility of scaling up from speech acts to conversational structures, we can note that some scholars have not hesitated to undertake such a project. Through studying argumentation, Jacobs (1989) and van Eemeren and Grootendorst (1984) show, for example, that arguments can be considered speech acts subordinated to a superordinate act, the expression of an opinion, to which they provide support or objection.

Moreover, we start to see that such a bearing might actually be related to the structure of illocutionary acts. For example, we just saw that (4) consists of questioning the sincerity of my prediction (sincerity condition), which normally will enjoin me to provide the reasons or evidence of my thinking that way (preparatory condition). It is to pursue this hypothesis that I now propose to reassess a critique Schegloff addressed to speech act theory regarding its incapacity to explain and anticipate the conversational phenomenon of pre-sequence.

Language Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis tend to consider compositional details primarily at the level of sentence semantics. And research associated with the Ethnography of Communication varies considerably in the closeness with which compositional (and other behavioral) details are examined, with attention given to details of form and content at one extreme, and at the other extreme there may be little information given about compositional details, with a focus instead just on the resulting functionalities of talk and the larger culturally situated constructions that the talk constitutes or reifies.
