Publishing in a journal with a ‘high’ citation index can be (but is not always) important for securing tenure and promotion. The citation indices for journals are published by Thomson ISI, a private company that specializes in services to the education sector, and which can usually be accessed through academic libraries (usually under the title Web of Knowledge).
