Allport (1954/1979) notes that intolerance occurs when a controlling group does not allow a group without political control to either assimilate (the "melting pot") or maintain its own culture ("pluralism"). Forbes (1985) finds that conformity, not ego weakness, is the principal explanatory factor in ethnocentrism between Canadian French- and English-speaking high school students.

Who is to decide? W h o is the arbiter? If a "White heterosexual" youth claims to be a bisexual Black, then are we to hate him or her? Laura Tohe's poems document the struggles of American Indians in a mainstream culture that neither supports nor accepts this stream of diversity. Her poem, "The Names," in Chapter 14 rang a particularly responsive chord with my family history and its stories. " Obedient and wanting to assimilate as her family had been unable to do in "Rush-Poland" (Russia and Poland), as she called the land whose pogroms her family had fled, she accepted a name that represented a key figure in a religion (Christianity) that had been used by the Nazis and other groups in anti-Semitic oppression.

Allen (1993) proposes that "humans . . have an innate fear and hostility to strangers" and that "strangerfear is the mysterious mechanism that creates in- and out-groups" (p. 2). Allen notes. Freed from the necessity of proving innate sUrangerfear in man and beast, it is now possible to demonstrate how much of modem conflict is caused by that innate hostility to strangers. The very diversity of the proof and the many different culmral contexts within which the proof is found actually cancels out culture as a source of hostility to strangers, as cultural influence working in one direction in one society is negated by a different cultural influence working in the opposite direction in another society.
