Example text

Oil paints hold the pigments in a binder like linseed oil. It dries much more slowly than watercolor or acrylic and must be cleaned with turpentine or other spirit. The paper, canvas or board, which serve as the substrate, should be sealed with acrylic to prevent the oil from penetrating and damaging the surface. There are other variations of paint, including water-mixable oils, gouache (a heavy-bodied opaque watercolor), egg tempera (a very quick-drying paint using egg yolk as a binder), casein (a paint using milk as a binder) and encaustic (pigment in beeswax).

As books have become an increasingly important part of my work, I have focused on learning traditional book-making processes and adapting them to meet my needs as an artist. I have also begun to incorporate digital processes where appropriate and useful. This book is designed to share what I have learned and to give you relatively simple and elegant ways of presenting your concepts and ideas. Demonstrations will present the processes, and Tips will give you additional information. Creative Explorations will challenge you to consider other options and will provide alternative insights.

Collagraphs Collagraphs are dimensional collages composed from a wide variety of materials—including cardboard, spackling compound, thin foam sheets and textured materials—that are inked and printed. They may be simple and used alone, or combined with other collagraphs and image-making techniques into a complex image. Stencils A stencil is a template made by removing sections from paper, cardboard or acetate to create the negative form of an image or text. Pigment is applied through the removed sections, leaving a reproduction of the stencil on the underlying surface.
