On the x-axis, there is the "apparent time", which in fact is an expression of releve similarity. On the y-axis, there is the real time scale, adjusted to range from 0 to 1. In a first phase (a) the change in time coincides with a change in similarity of the releves. In a second phase (b), fluctuation is independent of time. This confirms the previous findings concerning this data set. 6. Concluding remarks Measuring change in time under different initial conditions with or without varying external impact is essential for a better understanding of the functioning of natural systems.
As explained before, the data (Figure 1) have originated from Lippe et al. (1985). From the ordination trajectory (explained later in this chapter), it can be seen that in the first few years there is a directed change (Figure 4). After about 8 years, an equilibrium state is reached in which merely random variations occur. The objective of the analysis is to determine exactly the equilibrium state. e. it is the mean of 18 matrices. Then, beginning with the first field observation, 18 Markov releves are calculated.
This is done for all species in a set of releves. When ordinating the manipulated data, the time trajectory becomes smooth and fluctuations disappear. Figure 10 illustrates the application of the procedure to the data of Dierschke (\ 996). The points along the straight line come from the derived releves. Including these artificial data influences the result of the ordination: the configuration of the real releves is seen from a slightly different direction and is therefore not exactly the same as in Figure 9.
