The smooth running of the labour ward depends on such communication skills, but they must be employed surreptitiously: ‘You just have to make them feel important and learn how to pull the right strings’ (1990: 156). Whereas I might use the term ‘feminine wiles’ to explain such activity, and Mary Cronk has dubbed it ‘doing good by stealth’, Kitzinger et al. labelled it ‘hierarchy maintenance work’. On the basis of these labels and this behaviour, we may need to question the professional status of the midwife.
You never know what might happen when your back’s turned. All seemed remarkably quiet. The faint whiff of toast lingered in the air, a sign that a baby had just arrived. It mingled with the smell of disinfectant and the distinct aroma of boiled cabbage. You can’t beat that hospital smell. The sun must have been shining, as the afterglow of light filtered through the glass panel of the sluice door – the only light that reached the labour ward corridor. Footsteps echoed around the corner and the slow grating metal on metal of an erratic trolley added to the eerie air of calm.
In between the rooms, Dr Munroe quizzed the medical students about the conditions they had just seen. When we arrived at Jo’s room, I was relieved to see her looking a little less frazzled. But I was also struck with guilt as I remembered she had been desperate to ask me something. I looked at her, trying to convey an apology. ’ I mouthed, as Dr Munroe, the registrars, SHOs and medical students squeezed into the room. Was it really possible to get 13 people into one tiny labour room, and that’s including the poor woman and her partner?
