For Badiou, these are the four practices - "conditions", "truth-procedures" or "genres" - of science, love, art and politics. Outside these four conditions, philosophy simply cannot exist, or degenerates into a species of sophistry. Philosophy is, in other words, a dependent, distressed and belated discourse. Why, then, these four conditions? And what does Badiou make of them? I begin by sketching some problems with Theory of the Subject, in order to suggest why Badiou would find that text questionable enough to radically renovate his own thinking, and propose how Jacques Lacan proves instrumental in this renovation.
In Logics of Worlds, for example, we see a new emphasis on the problem of contemporary logic, as well as an attempt to describe in more detail the actual appearing and disappearing of truths-in-worlds, with more fulsome examples and new categories such as those of "points" and "openings". We also see an attempt to bring the conditions "forward", as it were. 16 Yet, for Badiou, philosophy must always lag behind its conditions. We are that present, but as yet unable to know it. Notes 1. For this reason it was all the more surprising - especially for the anglophone practitioners of theory and the permanent blurring of disciplinary boundaries - when Badiou suddenly called for a return to philosophy, for an end to the end of philosophy and its endless deconstruction, when he called for a restart. We were not ready. It sounded reactionary. To understand Badiou's call it is not enough to realize that many poststructuralists, such as Jean-Luc Nancy, never gave up on the name.
