The formal establishment of the AUDGPI in 1997 has provided a network and forum for academic departments on the island of Ireland to work together in teaching and research. The AUDGPI also provides an all-island rotating forum for the dissemination of research through an annual scientific meeting which regularly attracts up to 100 participants. Tom O’Dowd Notes 1. Howie J. , Realising the Potential: a report on the present position and future needs of departments of general practice in the medical schools of Ireland, AUDGPI, 2002.

He saw this as a way of bringing together general practitioners, nurses, midwives and health visitors to improve the health of patients in various parts of the city. At the same time Michael Lennard, a relatively recent Bristol graduate, was working in general practice in Hartcliffe, a new estate in the south of the city, and was keen to introduce medical students to general practice. In 1963 Sandy Macara (later president of the BMA) was appointed lecturer within the small public health department and given the responsibility for running a four-week general practice clerkship.

The department has always had a strong social medicine tradition which has allowed both primary care and public health to flourish and play a role in the national life. James was an internationally respected scholar, perhaps best remembered for his partnership with Petr Skrabanek and their iconoclastic views and writings on screening and about the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease. Trinity, through the Mercer’s Foundation, supported the development of a modern health centre in a deprived area in west Dublin, and the department takes part in the traditional final medical long case examinations.
