His fourth child, Samuel Fox I (1676-1755), was a draper, probably through his marriage to Elizabeth, the daughter and sole heiress, of Gilbert Wagstaff, draper of Derby10 . It is likely that this was the S. Fox who was Mayor of Derby in 1741-4211 . This would have made him 65 at the time. Samuel Fox II, the son, is mentioned as being a soap-boiler12 . Soap-boilers were in fact the industrial chemists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century13 and would have had much to do with the Industrial Revolution and the industrialisation of the Midlands.
